The Drifter and the Dream (part I)
"Each song on the album is a timeless piece that shares a lush and harmonious sound, filled to the brim with dreamy overtones. A musical genius of sorts for the modern era, Townsend enlists a few of his friends on the record which creates layers of musical foundation for the tracks. His attention to details when penning songs for the record is impeccable. Featuring elements of darkness and light in mankind, and the vibrancy of the vulnerable, he portrays in his pieces the choices that people may to shape their life's journey." says No Depression.
Townsend has been on the road with his songs for the past five years and performs both solo and with his band.
His song "For Now, We Are", with the accompaniment of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, recently appeared on "The Asheville Symphony Sessions" released in 2015.
He released his first EP "What Light Shall Be" in 2012 while living in Burlington, VT. He also recorded there his first LP, "Matt Townsend and the Wonder of the World" which was released in 2014.
"I know. It seems unfathomable. Comparing an up and coming artist to the likes of Bob Dylan and Neil Young would usually be considered musical sacrilege in the highest form. However when it comes to Matt Townsend, the connection is not only accurate, but further distinguishes him as possibly the most quintessential folk artist currently in the country." - Crave Online
"Townsend's voice is haunting as well as breathtaking as he croons every note. "Matt Townsend has become a highly regarded musician hailing from Asheville, North Carolina. Recently we are treated to his latest venture which comes in the form of The Drifter and the Dream (Part 1). A blissful record from start to finished, Townsend puts a new spin on a vintage sound. The 5-track masterpiece was recorded by Michael Selverne. Performing across the country for over 5 years, Townsend creates the perfect record, as it dives deep into his musical musings." -Paste
The Asheville Symphony Sessions
“Singer-songwriter Matt Townsend usually performs with an acoustic guitar, either solo or with his band, The Wonder of the World. And he writes his songs for that configuration — drums and bass. But, he says, “a lot of times I’ll hear other parts.” A fully orchestrated tune is just a dream to many musicians, but that vision was realized for Townsend when the Asheville Symphony Orchestra tapped him for a collaborative album project.”
“Matt Townsend is something of a conundrum.
On one hand, his lyrics indicate a world-weary, vulnerable old-timer. His voice projects across the generations, so much so that any listener would find themselves Googling the album release date within seconds. But, at the same time, he is wholly modern...So, you see, Matt Townsend is actually a good conundrum. Even better when you take a listen to his album. The recurring thought from track to track is that this is an artist completely poised to break through; this is exactly the guy who could bring folk back to the Newport Folk Festival. Big things are coming for him, and it’s our pleasure to sit back and watch.” - Popdose
"his lyrics can have a biting criticism more in line with the pointed fury of Bob Dylan....the album’s five tracks express a breadth of creative impulses...weighty lines like “it builds a brand new enemy to sell the same old war” flow with rhythmic ease." -The Huffington Post
"On his upcoming EP, The Drifter and the Dream part 1, Townsend explores the modern world and all of its rough edges with this exceptional collection of songs....Like Bruce Springsteen and Woodie Guthrie before him, Townsend channels in elements of folk, rock, and roots to create a great sound that doubles as a magnifying glass on his country’s pulse." - LORDS of DOGWOOD
"Matt Townsend really encapsulates the, so far, un-prevailing zeitgeist of those pining people who refuse to wither away in apathy." - Swept Media
"Townsend’s The Drifter and The Dream Part 1 EP is anything but sitting on the back porch music – it’s straight off the back porch into the territory of moon beams." - Moxipop
"There’s just an earnest quality about it that will sweep you straight off your feet...magnificent" - We All Want Someone to Shout For
“With the newest folk revival well upon us, it’s rare that any of it is actually good, and it’s even rarer to find it along with the heart and soul of Matt Townsend and the Wonder of the World" -Big Takeover Magazine
"This young man has to be one of my all time favorites...Matt has something that I think everyone's been looking for. Truth, beauty, peace, and enlightenment in his songs. They are mesmerizing. This is one album I can't stop listening to." -Nashville Music Guide
“A pure and heartfelt debut, Matt Townsend and The Wonder of the World is a delightful LP and a band to keep an eye on" -Hear Magazine
